Theme Ideas for Your Baby's First Birthday Party

I have a lot of ideas rattling around in my head...
Birthdays for the musically inclined
Monday's post about crazy celebrity birthday parties got me thinking a bit about the average one year old.  Tori Spelling may have gotten one thing right at her over-the-top birthday party for her little one, and that's the musical entertainment.

You don't have to hire a famous music act to play at your baby's party (though if I had to pick, I'd pick her), but playing some kid-friendly tunes is a wonderful way to get Baby and Baby's "friends" into the party mood, or feeling "partyish" as my five year old likes to say.  There have been countless studies linking brain development to music and in-utero music appreciation, so why not play your favorite age appropriate CD or playlist at the party?

Also, music played at just the right volume can mask any unfortunate party induced meltdowns by either the guest of honor or her "friends."

Here are a few great artists popular with the toddler set that won't make your ears bleed:

Kid-directed music has come so far from Raffi and Nanny G.  It's no longer inconceivable that we as parents might also enjoy the musical stylings of professed child entertainers.  With traditionally pop, punk, and alternative bands crossing over into the elementary and preschool music genre, we're finding their songs on our everyday playlists and in our car CD players.  That Dan Zanes character?  I've got TWO of his songs on my iPod and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Enjoy these fun, family friendly selections; it won't be long before you're frantically trying to tune out the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana while your kids beg you to go back to that song because they loooove it.  Seriously.  Lalalalalalalalaaaaa....

Site Manager - Melanie When it comes to first birthday parties, I'm a true expert in the field! I have three curly-headed little girls and have thrown two of them really great first birthday parties. There's a story behind the missing party...maybe I'll share someday!

I'm a writer/editor in Austin, Texas and in my spare time I loooove throwing parties - just ask my poor husband! Fortunately for me, I have lots of friends who love to come over, hang out, and enjoy the fruits of my party planning labor!
