- Long balloon
- Masking tape
- Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple tissue paper
Brighten a child's birthday party with a rainbow piñata. Though fairly easy, making a rainbow piñata takes a bit of time, as each layer of papier-mâché needs to dry completely before moving onto the next step. This rainbow piñata requires no painting, just lots of colorful tissue paper.
Mix together two parts water to one part flour in a bowl. Blend with a whisk to remove lumps. It should be the consistency of thick glue, not thick paste. Adjust the amount of water or flour to achieve the desired consistency.
Cut newspapers into narrow strips.
Choose a balloon with a long and narrow shape.
Blow up the balloon and tie the end.
Dip a strip of newspaper into the flour and water solution, and remove excess liquid by running the strip through two fingers.
Apply the strips to the balloon. Smooth each strip onto the balloon with your fingers. Add strips, creating a crisscross pattern. Completely cover the balloon. Leave a small 2-by-2-inch section (on the top of what will be the rainbow) uncovered. This will be used later as the hole to fill with candy. Allow this layer to dry and repeat with another layer. Allow that layer to dry, and repeat with a third layer. Allow that to dry. With each layer, leave the 2-by-2-inch hole uncovered.
Fasten a cord around the balloon, creating a hanging loop at the top of the piñata. This will be used later to hang the balloon. Tape the cord onto the outside of the piñata. Add another layer of papier-mâché. Allow it to dry.
Cut colored tissue paper into strips that are 2-inches wide. Fold in them half, to create 1-inch wide strips. Use the scissors to fray one side of the strip---the side opposite the fold.
Add the strips of tissue paper to the piñata, beginning at the bottom of the balloon. Start with a purple stripe. Affix the strips by applying flour paste to the folded edge and position with the frayed edge hanging down. Continue to add colors in the following order: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. Allow each layer of colored tissue paper to dry before adding another color.
Wait for the pinata to completely dry before using. The wrapped candy can be added through the opening created in Step 6. Prick the balloon to remove air.
TIPS AND WARNINGS
- TIP : Hang the pinata by the loop.
