Make your child's birthday party special by creating a unique party piñata. At the party you can fill the piñata with pieces of candy and other treats, and let the kids enjoy the traditional piñata game to see who can break open the piñata. It is fairly easy to make this turtle piñata. Allow time for the piñata to completely dry and harden, before using at the party.
Blend together 1 part flour to 2 parts water to make flour glue. Stir to remove lumps. Add a little more water or flour to reach a consistency of thick glue.
Cut newspaper into narrow strips.
Roll up several pieces of newspaper in a ball to create the turtle's head. Coat in the flour glue solution, and allow to dry and harden.
Fill balloon with air and tie the opening closed.
Soak a newspaper strip in the flour glue and remove excess liquid by pressing the strip between two fingers.
Lay the wet strip over the balloon. Run your hand over the strip to remove air bubbles. Add another strip, making a crisscross pattern. Coat the entire balloon, leaving only a two inch by two inch uncovered section on the top of the balloon, which will be the top of the turtle's shell. This is where the candy will be inserted into the piñata. Allow to dry completely. Repeat with two more layers, drying between layers. Leave the two inch by two inch section uncovered.
Attach a cord around the balloon, making one loop at the top of the piñata. This will be used to hang the piñata. Run masking tape over the cord, attaching it to the outside of the piñata.
Create the illusion of a shell by using masking tape along the lower half of the balloon, and fashioning a horizontal overhang.
Affix the turtle's head using masking tape. Cover the entire piñata with two more coats of papier-mâché. Cover the head, and build up the turtle's shell. Allow the papier-mâché to dry between each coat.
Paint the turtle when the papier-mâché is completely dry. When the paint dries candy can be added in the opening created in Step 7. Prick the balloon to remove air if necessary.
