How to Play Happy Birthday on the Piano : Overview :
At your friend's next birthday celebration, instead of just singing like everyone else, make it special by playing along on the piano. Years of piano lessons are not required, and you don't even need to be able to read sheet music or even play with both hands. All you need is enthusiasm, a birthday boy or girl to play for, and the basic ability to locate notes on the piano.

Step 1

Locate middle C on your piano or keyboard. The middle C is normally the 4th C on a typical 88-key piano.

Step 2

While singing the first line of the song "Happy Birthday to you" play the following notes on your piano starting from middle C: "C C D C F E"

Step 3

Singing the second line of the song "Happy Birthday to you" play along on your piano with the following notes: "C C D C G F"

Step 4

Play the following notes while singing the third line of the song "Happy Birthday Dear Insert-Name": "C C (High C) A F E D". Keep in mind that the (High C) key is located one octave higher than middle C, so in order to find (High C) simply count 8 keys up from middle C.

Step 5

Finish singing the last line of the song "Happy Birthday to You" while playing along with the following notes: "(B Flat) (B Flat) F G F". Remember that the (B flat) key is the black key located to the left of B.

TIPS AND WARNINGS

  • TIP : Have fun.
  • WARNING : It can be difficult at first understanding the notes on a piano or keyboard, if you don't understand what notes are found on the piano and how to find them ask a friend for help.

Site Manager - Melanie When it comes to first birthday parties, I'm a true expert in the field! I have three curly-headed little girls and have thrown two of them really great first birthday parties. There's a story behind the missing party...maybe I'll share someday!

I'm a writer/editor in Austin, Texas and in my spare time I loooove throwing parties - just ask my poor husband! Fortunately for me, I have lots of friends who love to come over, hang out, and enjoy the fruits of my party planning labor!
