Washington, DC offers a variety of opportunities for birthday parties for children. There are the typical activities at indoor activity centers, but there are also so many more opportunities. The Washington, DC area is full of museums that are both educational and entertaining. For entertainment there is also a national amusement park chain nearby, and the major league baseball stadium that is home to the Washington Nationals. Whether you are looking for a traditional birthday idea, or a unique one, Washington, DC has plenty of offerings.
Smithsonian Museums and National Zoo
There are many different museums in the Washington, DC area that are good opportunities for birthday parties for kids in Washington, DC. The Smithsonian museums do not offer party facilities, but the National Zoo does. At the museums, you can participate in self guided tours, or you can contact individual museums such as the National Gallery of Art, Air and Space Museum, or the Museum of Natural History to arrange guided tours. Those three tend to be favorites of children.
The National Zoo offers a private party room. It also offers a guided tour, snacks, plates and plasticware, and goody bags for all kids along with a special gift for the birthday child. The birthday parties must be reserved in advance and are held on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am until noon. The maximum number of children permitted is 20.
Sporting Events
The Washington Nationals Stadium is located in Washington, DC in the southeast section of the city. The stadium offers picnic areas at the stadium for parties when reserved in advance. You can also reserve your own private suite if you would like to be in the stadium for your party. Your children will enjoy having their party acknowledged on the large scoreboard announcing the birthday child by name.
Six Flags
There is a Six Flags Amusement Park located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland which is less than a half an hour from Washington, DC. This theme park is part of the Six Flags Amusement Park National Chain, and includes over 100 rides on the premises. There are a couple birthday packages available. Both require a minimum of 10 children. You have a choice between just having cake served, or having a full meal of pizza or hot dogs with a few extras for five dollars more per child. Your birthday party reservation must be made in advance and includes a pavilion area for your party, goody bags and a visit by a costumed character to your group's party.
Activity Centers
There are activity centers throughout the Washington, DC area where you can host children's birthday parties. These activity centers have different toys and play areas for the children at the party. Some include inflatable bounce toys, and others include themed play areas such as kitchens, fire station equipment and other supplies for children to use to stretch their imagination. A couple of examples are Playwise Kids and Pump It Up. Both offer private rooms for the party along with plates and utensils for dining. Food offerings vary depending on the location, as does the times you can reserve for your parties. These parties include time in the dining area along with time in the play area. Again, the amount of time depends on the package you reserve and the location at which you reserve.
Warning
All of these facilities have limited times when they will host children's birthday parties, and their facilities are limited as to the number of parties they can host in a day. To be safe, make your reservations at any of the above facilities at least three months in advance, and to be sure to get the date and time you wish you might need to reserve as far as six months in advance.
