Party ThemesOverview
A circus-theme party is a great way to entertain guests with the same thrill they feel when the circus comes to town. A circus party theme can include clowns, animals and circus-related games. While the circus theme doesn't have to include live exotic animals---props and domesticated alternatives work just as well. Recreating the feel of a live circus is recommended for this party theme. Signs, sounds and visuals play a significant role in recreating a circus atmosphere.
Under the big top
For a circus theme party, a circus tent is the best way to bring the look together. While a real circus tent is very difficult to come across, the look can be simulated by using colored fabric and colored sheets. A rental tent can be used as an inexpensive prop for a circus tent. Pole tents with no sides work the best. The sides can be supplemented with lightweight fabric acting as the walls. Interchanging colors of red, white, yellow and blue are recommended to replicate a circus feel. Large-bulbed Christmas lights in blue or red make great lighting for under the tent. Tables set up with spotted and striped colored tablecloths and balloon centerpieces make great focal points. Set the tables around the center ring so guests can be entertained while eating and relaxing.
Food
Have a large admission ticket printed out with each guest's name on it---place it at the appropriate table setting. A circus theme party can start off with appetizers for guests. Paper bags or popcorn boxes filled with peanuts or popcorn are great for satisfying the munchies. A cotton candy machine can be rented to create the tasty treat for guests. A simple menu of hot dogs, pizza, bagged chips, soda and lemonade will keep taste buds satisfied.
Animals
For a center ring, a large piece of colorful rope can serve as a border. While it is almost impossible to have real zoo or circus animals such as elephants, lions and monkeys at a circus-themed party, supplementing with domesticated or farm animals is an alternative. Ponies and horses can give rides to guests. A small petting zoo can be set up with pigs, goats and rabbits. Small dogs can be brought in to demonstrate simple tricks. Hula hoops, agility tracks and small ramps can be used to have dogs or other animals travel across. If needed, supplement some areas of the party with stuffed animals or posters.
Activities
Every circus needs some action and entertainment for guests. Have them interact with each other by playing different games. Set up a fortune teller to tell fortunes and charm guests. Host a marionette or puppet show to keep guests entertained. Hire a clown or have volunteers dress up and play the part, handing out balloons and small bags of wrapped candy. Create a carnival area where guests can perform games such as a ring toss and darts. Make a low-lying tightrope or balance beam for guests to cross to compete for a prize. Reward winners with small prizes such as noise makers, yo-yos and whoopee cushions. Be sure to have a CD player playing circus music from instrumental bands such as the South Shore Concert Band.
Party favors
Have every guest leave the party remembering something special from the day. Have a goody bag filled with things such as a disposable camera, harmonica, noisemaker, mini rubber chicken, M&Ms, Slinky, bubbles and a kaleidoscope. Make the party favor bag a fun bag that guests can enjoy long after the party is over. Tuck a thank you note in the bag.
