Party ThemesThe great thing about science birthday parties is that you can include so many experiments. Those experiments can even be part of the food preparation. A hands-on party is one that will last in the memory of partygoers and there are few things more hands-on than science experiments. Even if you don't want to turn the food and drink you serve into part of the entertainment, there are still ways to make the science element come to life.
Food Molds
If you don't want to turn the food you serve into an experiment, buy some molds. These days you can easily find molds in the shapes of brains and anatomically correct hearts. You can either pour Jell-O into these molds for eating, or freeze them for ice that you place into the punch.
Decorations
Turn your house into a science lab. Hand out lab coats to party guests. Create a lab table by covering an ordinary surface with a white sheet and placing beakers, Bunsen burners, test tubes, and microscopes on it. You can even make a game with the microscopes by having guests guess what they are viewing on the slide.
Egg in a Bottle
For younger kids who haven't yet seen this semi-magical science experiment, be sure to buy plenty of bottles and eggs. Provide supervision as the kids drop a burning piece of paper into the bottle and then situate the egg on top of it as the egg gets sucked into the narrow opening of the bottleneck. It's a surefire crowd-pleaser.
Mentos and Diet Coke
For older kids, and not a few adults, the reaction that takes place when a string of Mentos candies is quickly dropped into a bottle of Diet Coke will be the party highlight. What happens in this experiment is an explosion that looks like a shooting fountain of Coke that can reach as high as 20 feet into the air. Just make sure to get everyone out of the way or they will be soaked.
Erupting Volcano Cake
Nothing finishes off a science party like an exploding volcano cake. Make a bold statement with a delicious cake that literally erupts and spews lava down its side. For directions on how to make an erupting volcano cake check out the link in the resources section below.
